Sorry I haven’t blogged in a while, but we’ve had 3 books come out in the past 30 days (A Twist of Fate by Mark Johnson, Journey Through Travelers’ Tower by Hope Gillette, and The 8th Doll by Chris Rakunas) and another two which will come out within the next month (The Poison Jar by Sid Hamer, and our noir short story collection). Needless to say I’ve been pretty busy, but also very excited to bring these new books out.
Perhaps it’s just that we’re near a presidential election, but over the past few weeks it seems that we’ve received a lot of politically-motivated queries. Some examples:
- A “novel” where a Republican defeats President Barak Obama in November, who then launches a preemptive strike on Iran to take out their nuclear facilities which results in a war.
- A “novel” where the new Republican President guts all environmental policies that “protect” the earth for the sake of big business, resulting in the Earth becoming uninhabitable.
I could go on, but you get the idea. There’s only one problem with sending me these types of queries: I’m a registered Republican.
This is not to say I will ever be the poster-child for the far-right. I support both a woman’s right to choose and gay marriage. I think that quality healthcare should be readily available to the poor (although I think Obama-care is one of the worst things our government has done because it’s a mandate – something the government has no right to do). But I also support the First Amendment (both the separation of church and state and the freedom of the press), believe the Second Amendment really does give us the right to bear arms, think the debt needs to be brought under control even if it means some hard choices and cuts in government programs, and think the Federal government tramples on state’s rights far too often. In short, I’m more of a Libertarian.
This is also not to say I’m adverse to publishing books that are controversial. In truth, I wish we received more queries on controversial topics and less about vampires and dragons (those are the other winners for most queries right now). It’s that politically-motivated one-sided arguments are not controversial – they are politically-motivated one-sided arguments. I find these type of manuscripts boring regardless of whether they are written by members of the left or right, and I don’t publish things I consider to be boring.
In short, you have a better chance of me publishing your book on how extra-terrestrials are living among us, with the government’s full knowledge and assistance, than you do of me publishing one-sided political prattle…
